There are 50 characters in the novel, among them, Luca Fallaci, his son Carlo, and Anastasia, Oriana's grandmother. The first worked in a farm in Vitigliano di Sotto (Tuscany), owned by Da Verrazzano family, whose ancestor was the famous explorer Giovanni, the first European to explore the Atlantic Coast of North America. Luca's son Carlo traveled with Filippo Mazzei, Thomas Jefferson's friend, to start a winery in Virginia. Having left her daughter in an orphanage, Anastasia reached America and opened a brothel in San Francisco.
An unquoted scholar from Boston helped Fallaci to find information about the ship that was used to sail between Plymouth and Livorno (Tuscany).

The right title is "Una valigia piena di ciliege". The plural 'ciliege' instead of 'ciliegie' was a writer's desire.
