'Rosso Malpelo' by Pasquale Scimeca

Rosso Malpelo by Pasquale Scimeca (2007)
is a movie based on the short story by Giovanni Verga. The writer's masterpiece was inspired by the Franchetti-Sonnino inquiry into the state of Sicilian society.

The movie was shot in Sicily, near the "Parco minerario Floristella-Grottacalda". A previous movie, La discesa di Acla' a Floristella, by Aurelio Grimaldi (1992), was inspired by the same problem - the exploitation of young boys.

According to the ILO, "more than 200 million children in the world today are involved in child labour, doing work that is damaging to his or her mental, physical and emotional development."
