Turner and Italy (Ferrara, 11/16/08-2/22/09)

Turner e l'Italia
Ferrara, Palazzo dei Diamanti - Nov. 16, 2008 - Feb. 22, 2009

J. M. W. Turner travelled widely in Europe. He made many visits to Italy - the first one , in 1802, around the Alps; the second one, in 1819, in Turin, Milan, Brescia, Verona, Padova, Venice, Bologna, Rimini, Ancona, Loreto, Spoleto, Civita Castellana, Rome, Naples, Paestum, and Florence; the third one, in 1828, mostly in Rome; the last two in Venice.
Turner made large paintings and sketches. When Samuel Rogers revised his poem, Italy, he commissioned illustrations from J.M.W. Turner, Thomas Stothard and Samuel Prout. These were engraved on steel in the sumptuous edition of 1830. The book then proved a great success.

Samuel Rogers (or his publisher?) said that his Poems would have been dished but for the plates. I collaborated with the late Treasurer of Venice in Peril on a book on Turner in Venice, but that was dished by the British Museum, which rushed out its own inadequate book on that subject. www.jmwturner.org

Thank you very much, Dr Whittingham. My sources were Wikipedia and the article published by "Il Sole 24 Ore". The last one says, "L'artista, infatti, attinge spesso ai ricordi e agli schizzi eseguiti durante l'ultimo viaggio per comporre in atelier le sue tele e per realizzare gli acquerelli destinati all'edizione del pregiato volume di Samuel Rogers, «Italy»." Translation: In making his own paintings and watercolors for the Samuel Rogers's book 'Italy', the artist refers to his own memory and sketches.
The article is not signed, probably because It repeats more or less the online exhibit presentation, "L'artista attinge spesso ai ricordi e agli schizzi eseguiti durante l'ultimo viaggio per comporre in atelier i suoi dipinti e per realizzare gli acquerelli destinati all'edizione del pregiato volume di Rogers, Italy."
Thanks you again.
