Vincere by Marco Bellocchio tells the story of the relationship between Benito Mussolini and his first wife, Ida Irene Dalser. As Mussolini rose to power, Fascist agents tried to remove all proof of the relationship and the child of the union, so both wife and son were sent to asylums where young Benito Albino died from coma-inducing injections, and Ida died of a brain hemorrhage.
The movie is based on the book Il figlio segreto del duce by Alfredo Pieroni (Garzanti). Other books on the same subject are the following, L'ultimo filo' and La moglie di Mussolini by Marco Zeni (both published by Effe & Erre).
