Homosexuality is a very controversial subject in Italy. Italy is one of a few number of UE countries without a legislation protecting or recognizing gay rights [see LGBT rights in Italy from Wikipedia]
This days, a more intolerant climate than usual prevails in Italian public life.
1. The editor of the Roman Catholic newspaper "Avvenire", Dino Boffo, was described by Vittorio Feltri, the editor of "Il Giornale", only with the aim to discredit him, as “a homosexual known to the Italian secret services” and after few days of mediatic character assassination, he was forced to present his resignation [see the article by Rachel Donadio - "NYTimes"]
2. "On Tuesday night, a pair of firecrackers were thrown at a crowd of people on a street known for being a popular meeting place for gays and lesbians (...) Last week, a young man was stabbed in an attack near the site of Rome's summer gay and lesbian festival. Days later, a pair of tourists in Naples were beaten up by a gang of young men. The incidents spurred a gay musician in Rome to come forward saying he'd been assaulted by a man shouting insults earlier in August." [article - ANSA]
Contrarily to this homophobic trend, a documentary by Stefano Consiglio, "an hymn to love", is shown at Venice Days.
