Ferzan Ozpetek: A Retrospective (Los Angeles, 5/1/10-6/27/10)

UCLA Film & Television Archive, Cinecittà Luce and the Italian Cultural Institute of Los Angeles present
FERZAN OZPETEK: A RETROSPECTIVE

"In a firmly established but still-blossoming cinematic career, director Ferzan Ozpetek has carved out a unique niche in world cinema. The Turkish-born director has produced his oeuvre to date from a base in Italy, and indeed, has consistently displayed a cinematic vision that privileges characters moving between states of being, whether involving nationality, phases of life or social categories. In this way, his restless imagination has been a perfect foil for the staid monuments of Rome (a frequent backdrop in his work) whose reassuring and impassive façades mask diverse human experiences always under negotiation and construction. Immigrants, the lovelorn, those adrift in alienating jobs or marriages and especially gay people (little acknowledged in Italian cinema) undergo loss and renewal, and glimpse the possibility of transcendence, as Ozpetek's fluid and elegant visual style imbues their experiences with a deep humanism. The Archive is proud to welcome Ferzan Ozpetek in person at the Billy Wilder Theater for this retrospective, including the Los Angeles premiere of his latest film, Loose Cannons (2010)."

Note: June 8 and 12 screenings are free and will take place at the Italian Cultural Institute of Los Angeles.
