The Star of David and the Italian flag, Jews and the construction of a united Italy
* Article from CulturaItalia:
"Central Institute for the Union Catalogue of Italian Libraries is a partner in the European project entitled Judaica Europeana (http://www.judaica-europeana.eu/) financed by the eContentplus programme. The objective of the project is to gather digitalized information that documents Jewish presence and heritage in European cities and make them available on Europeana.
CulturaItalia is the Website of Italian culture (http://www.culturaitalia.it) which, in collaboration with the Judaica Europeana project and to celebrate 150 years of Italian Unity, is promoting the “Star of David and the Italian Flag, Jews and the construction of Italy” initiative.
This is the title of the new Web 2.0-style space open to all CulturaItalia users who wish to tell - via text, videos, photographs and audio- what they know about the Jewish contribution to social, cultural and political life in Italy from when the country was united, 150 years ago, to today.
Through the stories to appear in this section, in particular, added space will be given to learning about the history and traditions of the Jewish community since Italy was declared united 150 years ago.
Customs and traditions have changed with the passage of time, participation in the political scene, integration and migration after Unity, but also the religion itself, what was it before and how has it changed? Culture, through observation and by studying the products – from books to theatre – that best, according to the reader, represent the history of the relationship between Judaism and the Unity of Italy.
Alongside this initiative there will be articles and in-depth studies on this theme by the editors of CulturaItalia, as well as documents sent in by various institutions, the public at large and schools of all levels."

The Hunts of the Grand Dukes (Poggio a Caiano, 12/18/10-5/8/11)
The Hunts of the Grand Dukes
Two tapestries from the celebrated series made for the Villa of Poggio a Caiano
from Dec. 18, 2010 until May 8, 2011
"The exhibition, which opens on 18 December, displays the recently restored large tapestry made to a design by Alessandro Allori showing the Swan Hunt, and the large tapestry showing the Wild Goose Hunt, again to a design by Alessandro Allori, which has been subject to conservative maintenance for the occasion.
The two tapestries both belong to the Florentine State Museums; the first is normally conserved in the Villa of Poggio a Caiano and the second in the Tapestries Repository of Palazzo Pitti, which is managed by the Costume Gallery of Florence.
Datable around 1577-78, the two tapestries are part of a famous series commissioned by the Grand Duke Cosimo I and by the Grand Duke Francesco I to adorn the Villa of Poggio a Caiano. This show makes it possible to display to the public two works of outstanding quality that are not normally available for viewing, and also to document the history of the Hunts series and its restoration through graphics and informative panels."
