Capri on Screen

Le mépris (Contempt, in English / Il disprezzo, in Italian) -1963- by Jean-Luc Godard, based on the eponymous novel by Alberto Moravia, originally translated into English with the title A Ghost at Noon, was partly shot in Capri and, more precisely, in the stunning Modernist villa built by the architect Adalberto Libera for the writer Curzio Malaparte. There are two versions of the movie – the Italian one, with cuts, flat music and a shocking dubbing [the characters speak different languages and they need the help of an interpreter; so, the entirely dubbed version produces comical effects], all imposed by the producer Carlo Ponti; and the original release, longer, with the haunting musical score by George Delerue. This version is considered a masterpiece.
