"Corriere della Sera" publishes today a very interesting article by Antonio Stella. It describes some reactions to Mario Balotelli, a black Italian soccer-player.
A videochat with Stella is scheduled at 4:30 PM (Italian Time).
The last book by Stella is titled Negri, Froci, Giudei & Co. L’eterna guerra contro l'altro.

Becco Giallo Publishing
Becco Giallo is an innovative publishing house. It has been established in 2005. The name was taken from that of a satirical magazine founded in the twenties by Alberto Giannini. The house name and work refer as a sort of tribute to that magazine, whose use of the comic idiom was a way to tell, to criticize, to discuss.
From the beginning the house decided to publish non fiction graphic novels. They tell about historical and social events.
Authors are among the most promising young Italian drawers and talents from the world of comics.

Fumetti Podomatic
Fumetti - Improve your Italian with fun listening and reading!
"This is a podcast for intermediate or advanced Italian language learners. You can expand your vocabulary by listening to spoken Italian while you also read the transcript and study the words that are unfamiliar. The best part is that you'll have a lot of fun in the process! "Fumetti" are Italian comic books. The podcasts are comic books that were originally dramatized for Italian radio (RADIO 2).
This podcast will focus mainly on three comic book characters that are incredibly successful in Italy: Tex, Diabolik and Dylan Dog. The podcasts and other materials on the website will show you how deeply the characters have entered the consciousness of contemporary Italian society.
Transcripts are available for download."
You can send comments and suggestions at fumetti@podomatic.com.

ItalianoBlogo - Un blog per imparare l'italiano
On the website ItalianoBlogo "you'll find audio and video files that you can listen to while reading the script of the spoken words at the same time. There is an index of the available titles when you follow the link that says "Titoli Disponibili" [Available Titles]. A glossary of some of the more difficult words has been provided along with an online dictionary. This should make it easy to learn new words in the context of authentic Italian. The recordings have been put into beginning, intermediate and advanced categories so that you can start at a level where you're comfortable and over time you can work on more advanced material. [...] As you advance to higher reading levels you'll find excerpts from some classic literature as well as music videos."

OpenCourseWare on Dante and Boccaccio
Some day ago, "la Repubblica" published an article by Alessio Balbi about an imminent change in high-education. The article quoted prof. David Wiley who said that Universities "will be irrelevant in 2020" [Deseret News].
The Italian journalist mentioned as an example MIT OpenCourseWare (MIT OCW), an initiative of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to put all of the educational materials from its undergraduate- and graduate-level courses online, free and openly available to anyone and anywhere.
"As of August 2008, of the over 1800 courses available, only 26 included complete video lectures, and not all of these have complete lecture notes. The lack of lecture notes makes it difficult to follow some lectures, for example, when the lecturer is referring to slides being projected in the lecture hall. The selection of available courses is somewhat incomplete. For example, prerequisite classes for a given course are frequently not available. However, the quality of those courses which include complete materials is very high, and many of the lecturers are extremely compelling. The video is available in streaming mode, but may also be downloaded for viewing offline, though the procedure for downloading is not explicitly given. Many video and audio files are also available from iTunes U." [Wikipedia]
Among all 1800 courses, I found the course 'Medieval Literature: Dante, Boccaccio, Chaucer' - Spring 2005 - prof. James Cain
Other universities offering open courses can be found at OpenCourseWare Consortium.

Italia, Etiopia e Gabriella Ghermandi
Italy has a complex relationship with Ethiopia because of (1) the loss of the battle at Adua in 1896 and (2) Mussolini, who was determined to vindicate the loss at Adua and reestablish the Roman empire by conquering countries in Africa which were not yet colonies of Britain or France in the pre WWII era, and Ethiopia was the jewel in that crown, if only briefly, if never really, if done brutally. As the 20th century approached, Italy found itself without African colonies and only the kingdom of Ethiopia and the tiny republic of Liberia were yet to be claimed. Italy first went after Ethiopia at this time with arrogance - after all they had supplied arms to the emperor and he would capitulate, but, after advancing deep into Ethiopia, the Italians were forced to withdraw to defensible positions in Tigray, where the wor armies faced each other, and, even with its army of 17,700 and 56 artillery, they ultimately lost to Ethiopian forces under Menelik, mostly riflemen - a humiliating defeat. A good article on the situation leading up to and the battle at Adua is found at: http://digilander.libero.it/fiammecremisi/adua.htm An excellent YouTubeshort feature with images of the Adua battle can be found at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id_3pzPjTd0
As a result, Mussolini sought to heal that humiliation before the second World War ended. An excellent historic film on the colonization of Ethiopia by Italians, historic, in Italian, can be found at: www.lastoriasiamonoi.rai.it/puntata.aspx?id=515.
Many immigrants from Ethiopia are now in Italy, amongst them the brilliant writer Gabriella Ghermandi whose novel about that colonization, entitled, Regina di Fiori e di Perle, is a literary masterpiece and a mirror for Italy to see itself, then, and now.
Ms. Ghermandi has her own website, with many pages and links worth exploring: www.gabriella-ghermandi.it/ . Ms. Germandi has lived in Bologna since she was a child, the product of an Italian father and Ethiopian mother who could not wait to get out of Ethiopia and to Italy to try and erase the stain of having lost so much in that period. Ms. Ghermandi, in spite of her mother's efforts, speaks not only a perfect Italian, in which she also wrote this book, but also the language of her mother's people, which she used when she returned to gather their stories for this oral history of a book.
Professor Federica Sossi of the University of Bergamo and webmistress of the site highligting stories of immigrati from many countries - wrote a provacative recensione of Ghermandi's book on the website for La Libreria delle Donne di Milano.
Gabriella Ghermandi saw the review and contacted Prof. Sossi which led to a Dialogo a Distanza molto interessante.
Ms. Ghermandi also reads her stories, sings and presents music of Ethiopia in free "concerts/readings". Here is a video link to one such spettacolo; there are other links to others on her website. http://www.culturaspettacolovenezia.it/show_img.php?id=29092&name=linkfoto&thumb=1
Oggi, Italy seems to be working to help Ethiopia with several worthwhile initiatives like this one:
How Italy treats the immigrants from Ethiopia, and elsewhere, is the topic for another blog. Punto e basta.

La Paura degli "Altri" - Fear of the Other
Amara Lakhous wrote the book cited elsewhere on this blog about the clash of civilizations Lo Scontro di civilta' per un ascensore a piazza Vittorio per quale il pretesto è un delitto: il corpo di un uomo, ucciso a coltellate, viene trovato nell’ascensore di un palazzo nei pressi di piazza Vittorio, una delle zone più multietniche di Roma.
To deepen our understanding of all this we need to understand Huntington: Lo scontro delle civiltà e il nuovo ordine mondiale.

Begnini from "La Vita e' Bella" to Dante
Simone Veil [ex-President of the EU and a holocaust survivor] writes in The Corriere della Sera of 24 March 2009 that Begnini did not merit the Oscar he won 10 years ago for his holocaust-themed movie La Vita E' Bella. Why? Because, like Spielberg's movie Schindler's List, it is fake and only a documentary on the subject merits any viewing on this horrible event. http://www.corriere.it/cinema/09_marzo_24/shoah_benigni_oscar_veil_danilo_taino_41004d8c-1847-11de-911f-00144f486ba6.shtml
And now, beginning last year in Italy, Begnini is again in all the papers for his "gift" of giving Dante to the public, which he is doing, says he, "Cosi' ho scoperto che la vita e' bella".
All this deserves some looking into as it is packed with many worthwhile issues.

Let's turn now to a review of Spielberg's film and its other detractors for similar reasoning of its being false, including the admission by Schindler's widow that there was no list:

and the ending - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPHvLtitxug&feature=related
Here is a good site on which to read the real story of Oscar Schindler - http://www.lager.it/oskar_schindler.html
For this post - a short version of his life: Oskar Schindler nasce il 28 aprile 190820a Zwittau, nei Sudeti, una regione dell'allora Cecoslovacchia.
SO--why does any of this matter? Was a worthwhile debate when these films came out and remains a live debate today, as witnessed by Veil's criticism in today's paper. And because Begnini is controversial, for good and for bad, and provacative, and now he is becoming ever more so for his Dante readings, wildly popular in Italy, though not without criticism, and he is about to come to Boston in June 2009 to share his Dante with America. Begnini himself ties his Oscar with his Dante and Primo Levi's now forever famous words in "Se Questo e' un Uomo" - his first holocaust memoir [although he survived, he later committed suicide] - "Pensavo che la vita fuori era bella e che avrebbe continuato a essere bella". Here's Begnini:
"THANK YOU, thank you.
http://www.repubblica.it/2009/03/sezioni/spettacoli_e_cultura/benigni-francia/vita-bella/vita-bella.html

Let's turn now to a review of Spielberg's film and its other detractors for similar reasoning of its being false, including the admission by Schindler's widow that there was no list:

Caos Calmo special
A widower spends his mourning days on a bench in front of his daughter’s primary school in Antonello Grimaldi’s Berlinale Competition title Chaos Calmo (Quiet Chaos). With Nanni Moretti as the widower and co-screenwriter, the film will of course recall Moretti’s own Palme d’Or winner La stanza del figlio (The Son’s Room), but Grimaldi’s adaptation of the bestselling Sandro Veronesi novel is different enough to stand on its own. Pietro is a successful TV executive whose company is working out an important merger deal when his wife’s death leaves him to care alone for their 10-year-old daughter Claudia. On his daughter’s first school day after the funeral, Pietro promises to wait for her at the gate until school is out, something that might have been decided on a whim on that first day but quickly turns into a habit, much to the astonishment of his family and colleagues who nevertheless respect the right of father and daughter to deal with their grief in their own way.

Three aspects of the film merit special mention and links - the rapport between the book and the film, the park bench, and the treatment of the feminine:

Online quizzes, games
Students sometimes look for extra practice or exercises to do outside of class which provide them with some kind of feedback. Languages Online works well for students in the first level of Italian. The site is divided into topics, beginning with "saluti" and ending with "la casa", as well as three separate grammar units. Students are able to take quizzes related to the different topics and receive instant feedback. There is also a listening component and a section devoted to games. This could be an effective supplement to an Elementary Italian course.
Language games
For some extra vocab drills, languagegames.org offers word searches, crosswords and hangman by category, from colors to animals to the weather. These games are effective for students of all ages to reinforce vocab.
